Yan Junling was born in the Han dynasty and grew up in the bustling port city of Nanjing. He started his career as a shipwright and then moved on to become a captain of a merchant ship before he took on the role of head of the port administration in 1869.
Yan Junling's contributions to the development of the port were numerous.
